Kingsville sweeps Hounds to gain LSC series split

The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team got off to a solid start Friday with a pair of walkoff wins in its bid to take its first Lone Star Conference series win of the season.

But the Javelinas had other plans, returning Friday’s favor with an 8-4, 15-4 doubleheader sweep Saturday at Greyhound Field to grab a split in the four-game set.

The LSC’s teams normally play four games in three days, with a Saturday twin bill and single games Friday and Sunday, but the teams opted for two doubleheaders due to a forecast of rain for Sunday.

ENMU junior Matthew Artalejo delivers a pitch in the top of the third inning against Texas A&M-Kingsville in the opener of Saturday’s Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Greyhound Field.

The Greyhounds held leads in each contest, but both were short-lived. ENMU (14-10, 4-8 LSC) got a single run in the first inning of the opener with back-to-back singles to open the game and an errant throw on Chris Sims’ attempt to steal third base.

But Kingsville (13-9, 7-5) took advantage of a pair of ENMU errors in a three-run second and never looked back.

In the third inning of the nightcap, ENMU got an RBI triple from third baseman Sam Hedrick, who then scored on a single by Blake Cooper for a 2-1 lead. But the Javelinas answered with a three-run fourth, including RBI singles by James Black and Ryan Guedry and a wild pitch that plated another run.

Kingsville got a four-run fifth inning, punctuated by first baseman Taylor Taska stealing home, and added seven runs in the final two innings.

Cooper finished 4-for-8 on the day to lead the Greyhounds, including a homer, three RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Hedrick went 4-for-9 with a pair of RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

Third baseman James Black led Kingsville with a combined 5-for-9 with four runs scored and a pair batted in.

ENMU returns to action Friday in another four-game LSC series at Cameron, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
