JEMEZ PUEBLO — Facing a team which had lost only once all season on its home court, the Dora Lady Coyotes found a way Friday night.
Despite losing four starters to fouls, Dora outscored the Lady Warriors 13-10 in overtime and escaped with a 75-72 round-of-16 state tournament victory, advancing to a 3 p.m. quarterfinal game against top-seeded District 8-1A rival Tatum on Tuesday at Bernalillo H.S.
Senior Taylor Dillard scored 19 points to lead three Lady Coyotes in double figures. Dora (15-13), seeded ninth in the 16-team field, shot 32-of-44 from the free throw line and got two free throws from eighth-grader Jaedin Paxon to take the lead for good in the OT.
The Lady Warriors (25-3) were led by 23 points from Monique Yepa and 20 from Janae Henderson.
Melrose 61, Cimarron 49 — At Melrose, the third-seeded Lady Buffs (18-10) got 21 points from freshman Reagan Carthel to hold off the Lady Blue Jays.
Melrose (18-10) will face sixth-seeded Floyd (19-8) in a 4:45 p.m. quarterfinal on Tuesday at Bernalillo.
The Lady Buffs led all the way, but saw Cimarron (13-12) pull to within two points in the third quarter before eventually building a 16-points lead. Jessie Pittman (21) and Selina Rael (19) did most of Cimarron’s damage.
Floyd 49, Hagerman 42 — At Floyd, the Lady Broncos (19-8) erased a three-point halftime deficit to turn back the Lady Bobcats.
Senior guard Tabitha Ornelas scored 20 points and junior guard Jasmine Gomez added 15 for the Lady Broncos, who converted 15-of-20 free throws. Taylor Hamill led all scorers with 27 points for 11th-seeded Hagerman (17-11).
Magdalena 43, Fort Sumner 26 — At Magdalena, the fourth-seeded Lady Steers used a 17-5 run in the second quarter to open some breathing room in their victory over the Vixens
Breann Baca had 17 points for Magdalena (25-3). Fort Sumner (10-17) got 10 points from McKayla Landreth and nine from Angelica Torres.
Texico 63, Santa Fe Prep 31 — At Texico, the Class 2A top-seeded Lady Wolverines rolled to a 27-point halftime lead and cruised past the Blue Griffins.
Sophomore Brianna Reyna scored 20 points for Texico (18-7), while four others had eight points. Santa Fe Prep (16-11) got 14 points from Alexis Mundt and 10 from Joy Marion.
