My boss recently gave me what could be one of the coolest presents I’ve ever gotten. A DVD of Underdog episodes.

For those of you who may not know, Underdog was a 1960s cartoon about a superhero dog.
David told me the only thing he never really cared for in the Underdog cartoon was Underdog’s love interest, Polly Purebred, saying that he never understood what Underdog saw in her.
Although I agree that she was the less favorable character in the show, I told David not to be too hard on Polly Purebred, because let’s face it, there was still a strong female stereotype in the early ’60s.
Women were starting to gain more independence but that idea that our main purpose was to be the pretty face latched onto the arm of our man was still a widely accepted stereotype.
Ask.com puts it best:
“They were expected to wear pearls and high heels and await the return of their all-knowing husband and conclusively women were trained into this routine from an early age.”
And if you were a single lady during that time, you were usually the damsel in distress being saved by a man.
That’s why women love Hollywood ladies such as Doris Day and Maureen O’Hara. They were tough and they weren’t going to lie down and conform for any man!
