In an effort to strengthen the bonds between Air Commandos at Cannon Air Force Base and local community partners, Cannon’s Whispering Winds Golf Course is scheduled to open for public use in the near future.

In addition to increased opportunity for interaction between Airmen assigned to the 27th Special Operations Wing and members of the local community, the initiative allows for better utilization of the golf course itself.

“Cannon AFB continuously seeks to work with our local community partners and explore initiatives that bring us closer together,” said Capt. Derek White, 27 SOW public affairs officer.

In order to obtain access to the 18-hole golf course, interested parties must complete an application and consent to a background check.

“The application process takes approximately two weeks to complete,” White said. “The goal is to ensure an element of accountability as to who is provided access to the golf course, which is located within Cannon’s gates.”

Civilians may gain access to the base free-of-charge; however, golf fees are as follows:

Green Fees:

• Weekday: $22

• Weekend: $25

• Holiday: $25

Golf Carts:

• Nine-hole, electric cart: $9

• Nine-hole, pull cart: $5

• 18-hole, electric cart: $14

• 18-hole, pull cart: $5

In addition to providing new recreational opportunities for residents of the Clovis and Portales area, the open invitation will afford civilians the ability to interact with Airmen and gain a better understanding and appreciation for the men, women and mission of the 27 SOW.
