The man in your life can have style, too

Another Valentine’s Day has passed. Did the man in your life do great, giving you reason to reward him? Or is he in the doghouse, and required to do whatever you tell him for the next 364 days?

In either case, it’s a chance to give your man his own “NiekaStyle.”

Clothing is less complicated for men. If they like it, it fits and it doesn’t cost $100, they buy it and go home. Girls are more discerning, so women’s clothing stores have “the chair.”

Fellas, no Valentine’s Day gift saves you from “the chair.”

Here’s the guy code to guide you in shopping.

• Shoes: A coworker says a man needs the following: Work shoes you can mess up, black dress shoes, brown dress shoes, a white pair and black pair of basketball shoes. After that, you’re accessorizing, and men rarely accessorize.

According to him, you can pick any of those five shoes without him present and he’ll wear them if they fit. So, any shoe outside the zone, he should be involved. Also check if his feet are wide or narrow.

• Dress shirts/ties: You can’t go wrong with solid ties or shirts, so get a rainbow of colors. Solid shirts can go with solid, striped or checkered ties. Solid ties go with any shirt or men’s cardigan. Patterned ties don’t go with argyle sweaters and dominant stripes gotta match a solid shirt.

When in doubt on what colors match, look at sports teams. Solid colors with white shirts can represent area teams. Purple for Clovis, red for Portales, and good luck finding hunter green for Texico. For pro sports, be simple like the Raiders (pair silver, black and white any way you want) or spice it up like the Steelers (black and yellow, black and yellow!) or Broncos (orange is risky, except when paired with blue).

• Sports jerseys: Since we brought up sports, it begs the question of when one can wear a team jersey. Ask yourself ... Is he still in high school or college? Is he attending a game or watching that team play on TV? Is he a professional athlete? If he’s 0-for-3, he can’t wear a jersey.

Crocs: No. Men can’t rock the Crocs and have “NiekaStyle.
