As a little girl my father always told to slow down, that I want to do everything and wanted too much. I know that’s when the rebellion started and a rocky relationship began

between me and my old man.
On Beyonce Knowles’ newest album, a song called “Flawless” resonates with that little girl in me. It features the spoken word of feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “We teach girls to shrink themselves ... We say to girls ‘you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful.’”
Turning 25, I still want to do it all and I thank that song for reigniting my vision, but with maturity comes wisdom.
My dad was never telling me I couldn’t do it all, he was just telling me that it’s going to be hard. It’s no surprise, we’re so much alike. So his words were most powerful to me this Christmas when he told me to live life without regrets and go for my dreams.
He told me when he was my age he wanted to be a famous musician, but he knew his priority was to make a living for my mother and older brother.
No matter how much complaining I do, the only change that needs to help get things moving is within me.
It’s like 25 is giving me a new sense of determination. If I have given you any insight to me weekly, it’s that I don’t give up or give in.
