Rams lose again at St. Mike's Shootout

CMI staff

SANTA FE — It was the same story in Santa Fe for the Portales Rams, as poor shooting was the culprit in another rought night.

Friday night, it was Wingate that jumped out to a big lead, and never let Portales get back into things in a 54-45 victory at the St. Michael’s Shootout.

Kennel Jones scored 13 points to lead three in double figures for Wingate (8-6), which posted a 16-4 advantage after the first quarter, and never led by less than three the rest of the night.

“We just didn’t shoot well again,” Portales coach Rickie McBroom said. “We had opportunities. Our kids are trying hard, and they’re just not going in. We had to scramble from there the rest of the game. It’s difficult.”

Zach Campbell scored 17 points, including 7-of-9 at the line, to lead the Rams (8-7).

The Rams, who face event host St. Michael’s Saturday, lost 49-39 to Silver on Thursday.

“It was just like Silver,” McBroom said. “Somewhere in the third quarter, they started spreading us out and they made their free throws late.”

Kasee Begay scored 12, while Benson Perry added 11 for Wingate.

Portales got 11 points from Daniel Sanchez, and Isaiah Alvarado hit three of Portales’ four 3-pointers for all of his nine points.
