WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State’s women were due to break out of a recent shooting slump.
Unfortunately for Eastern New Mexico University, the Zias were victimized on Saturday.
MSU, just 2-for-36 in its past two games from 3-point range, went 7-for-18 on Saturday and thoroughly outplayed the Zias in a 75-44 Lone Star Conference victory.
Junior guard Lisa Hampton, making just her second start of the season, knocked down 4-of-7 tries from long range to finish with 18 points and tie teammate Kirsti Degalia for game scoring honors.
Meantime, the Mustangs (10-5, 2-2 LSC) made the going tough for the Zias, especially in the first half when ENMU (3-8, 1-1) managed just 7-for-26 from the field and found itself in a 46-19 hole.
The Zias took their only lead of the game when junior Jasmine Johnson scored in the second minute. But a layup by Degalia 30 seconds later sparked a 12-2 run and the Mustangs were off to the races.
MSU steadily pulled away the rest of the half. A 3-point basket by sophomore guard Jordyn Cooper with 6:37 left in the half made it 33-17, but the Zias managed only two free throws the rest of the time.
MSU led by as much as 38 points with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
No one reached double figures in scoring for the Zias, although Johnson did have a game-high 10 rebounds to go with her team-leading nine points. The Zias finished 16-of-53 from the floor, including 4-of-19 from 3-point range, and were just 8-of-21 from the foul line.
Forward Andrea Carter added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs.
