RIO RANCHO — Clovis High’s girls made short work of struggling Rio Rancho Cleveland on Friday night.

Led by 20 points from junior guard Danni Williams, the Lady Wildcats scored the game’s first eight points and steadily pulled away from there for a 73-32 drubbing of the Storm.

The defending Class 5A champion Lady Cats (13-0) extended their winning streak to 19 games, dating to a loss at Hobbs in late February last season. Junior guard Nichele Hyman scored 14 points, and senior guard Brandi Gomez added 11 points.

CHS coach Jeff Reed said the Lady Cats “played lights out” during the first half, adding an 11-0 run to open a 21-5 lead by the end of the quarter and extending that to 49-15 at halftime while forcing 16 first-half turnovers. Most of the second half was played with a running clock.

“I thought we played well in spurts, and did some good things,” CHS coach Jeff Reed said. “I don’t think we played with quite the energy we’ve been playing with at home, but we did a good job (after) being on the road all day on Friday.”

The Lady Cats led 61-20 after three quarters before the Storm (4-5) managed to play them even in the final stanza.

Clovis is likely to face another blowout in its next outing, a week from today at Alamogordo, before the schedule stiffens up again.

“We’ve got to keep our edge somehow, because we know La Cueva and Valley are around the corner (in road games Jan. 17 and 18),” Reed said. “We’ve been able to develop the bench a little bit, so if we do get into foul trouble people will be able to step in and help a little bit.”

For Cleveland, which suffered the largest margin of defeat in its five-year history, senior point guard KayLyn Clifford finished with a pair of 3-pointers and 11 points off the bench. The Lady Cats, who improved to 6-1 all-time against the Storm, held Cleveland’s starters to a combined 11 points.
