Hounds end slide, topple Highlands

Apparently, there's nothing like a little home cooking for the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team.

ENMU snapped a nine-game losing streak while improving to 9-1 at Greyhound Field on Tuesday with a 6-4 victory over New Mexico Highlands.

Senior left fielder Luis Quinones went 4-for-5 for the Greyhounds (12-10) and became just the fourth player in the program's 20-year history to compile 200 career hits. Meantime, junior catcher Josh Cunningham delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to put the Hounds in front for good 4-3.

ENMU starter Ben Monticello breezed through the first seven Highlands hitters before running into trouble. He gave up five hits and three runs in the third as the Cowboys (14-8) erased a 2-0 deficit.

Right-hander Brett Humphries (3-2) pitched scoreless ball through the middle innings before senior Ryan Pruitt worked the final three frames, allowing two hits and a run in the ninth before nailing down his first save.

Michael Garcia (2-1) took the loss, allowing three runs and four hits over four innings. All of his decisions this season have come against the Hounds, who now lead the season series with the Cowboys 4-2.

ENMU continues its homestand with a four-game Lone Star Conference series against Cameron, which begins with a 5 p.m. single game on Friday.
