Meetings Watch - Roosevelt County Commission

The Roosevelt County Commission met Tuesday. Here is a report from the meeting:

  • Sandy Van Der Veen, Portales MainStreet executive director reported Xcel Energy had awarded an $8,000 grant to six businesses.

Van Der Veen said Portales MainStreet is sponsoring the Portales Arts Council Sidewalk Arts Competition on April 13 at the town square. This year's theme is science-fiction and fantasy. Children in grades kindergarten-sixth draw for free.

Van Der Veen said she will attend a fundraising institute in March and a national workshop in April in New Orleans to prepare her for state certification.

She said her office is still working with Constructors Inc., regarding road construction in the area. She said her office is unsure when construction will hit downtown.

  • Doug Redmond, director of the Roosevelt County Community Development Corp., reported his department is working on a marketing plan with developers from the Southwest and Midwest regions of the country to find property on which to build apartments. Redmond said responses so far have been good.

Redmond said his department looking for a buyer of the Portales Inn, referring to it as an important project back on track.

  • County Assessor Kenner Carrasco reported he asked for an extension on his department's land notices. Carrasco said he requested a 30-day extension, which was granted. He said his department is inputting personal property into its Tyler information system. He said the system has changed the way his department processes personal property.
  • County Sheriff Darren Hooker reported his office is trying to fill one job opening.
  • County detention center administrator David Casanova reported there are 82 individuals in custody, 29 of which are Eddy County inmates. There are 70 males and 12 females. There are two juveniles in custody from Quay County. County commissioners were scheduled to inspect the jail Tuesday.
  • Road Department Director Ricky Lovato reported K. Barnett and Sons completed work on curb and gutter work on North Avenue O and his department is preparing the road for chip sealing. He said he hopes to haul clichee on Thursday or Monday at the latest. He said his department is working on South Roosevelt Road P.
  • Commissioner Rick Leal reported fire department training is scheduled for this weekend. Leal also said the funeral for firefighter Richard McNally, who died Sunday, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
  • The commission approved an indigent burial for a Portales woman who died Dec. 14 and whose body was never claimed by family members or her estranged husband.
  • The commission approved a memorandum of understanding between the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and Roosevelt County for the offender watch system. This is a standard agreement between each sheriff's office in the state. The state funded the offender watch program in 2012. The county needs to finalize the state funding and mandated before the system can be used.
  • The commission approved the award bid 2013-01 oil and gas equipment audit. County Manager Charlene Webb reported her department received one bid from Total Assessments Solutions Corp. for $69,500.
  • The commission tabled a contract between the county and AeroCare (MedTrans) offering coverage to county employees.
  • The commission approved renewal the Pitney Bowes financial agreement. Webb pointed out there will be an increase of $37 a month.
  • The commission approved an agreement between the county and TASC to conduct an oil and gas equipment audit.
