Clovis school board to consider graduation date change

Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Terry Myers is bringing in the Board of Education to help make a decision on changing the date of the CHS graduation.

The event, slated for May 18, falls on the same day as the final day of the state's spring athletic championships.

The board will hold a special meeting March 18 to discuss the issue as well as review future calendars for other scheduling conflicts.

Myers said Friday the only suggestion that has been recommended so far is moving graduation from Saturday to Sunday.

Joel Sievers, the parent of a Clovis High senior athlete, asked Myers to change graduation to May 19 during last month's school board meeting and in writing.

But Myers has said switching the date would benefit only a few of the more than 500 graduates.

Myers said he has spoken to a New Mexico Activities Association official about the accuracy and stability of the event schedules to avoid facing the problem again.
