Class 1A playoffs, first round

Records: Capitan 7-3, Fort Sumner 4-6

Fast start: The Tigers scored the game's first 22 points, which included a 92-yard punt return by Tory Padilla less than two minutes into the game.

More big plays: In addition to Padilla's long TD return, Capitan scored on runs of 45 and 53 yards.

A little too late: Fort Sumner scored on a 25-yard pass from Garrett Hisel to Shilo Boyle with less than 2 1/2 minutes left. On defense, Boyle had two first-half interceptions.

Streaking: Capitan has won seven straight games since a 20-6 loss to the Foxes in September.

Texico senior running back Shay Harrison scores the second of his two touchdowns Friday in the Wolverines 35-14 loss at Santa Rosa. The win earned Santa Rosa the district title and likely top seed in the Class 2A playoffs.

Springlake-Earth 28, Bovina 7

Records: Springlake-Earth 8-2 (3-1 District 3-1A Division II), Bovina 4-6 (2-2)

Difference: Capitan scored the game's first 22 points, which included a 92-yard punt return by Tory Padilla less than two minutes into the game.

Difference-makers: Springlake-Earth, senior Nathan Garcia rushed for 124 yards on 16 carries, while senior Elder Rojas added 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Bovina, junior RB Marco Terrones rushed for 113 yards on eight carries and pulled the Mustangs to 14-7 in the final minute of the half by scoring from a yard out.

End result: The Wolverines captured the district title on a tie-breaker over Sudan (8-2, 3-1), which lost head-to-head to Springlake but blasted last-place Morton 49-6 on Friday. The Mustangs got the district's third playoff berth on a tiebreaker by virtue of a head-to-head win over idle Farwell (6-4, 2-2).
