Lady Buffs score early, blank Zias

CANYON, Texas — West Texas A&M broke open a close game with two goals in a six-minute span late in the first half Tuesday night to beat Eastern New Mexico University 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference women's soccer opener for both teams.

Leslie Briggs had a goal and two assists for the Lady Buffs (2-2-1), who were nursing a 1-0 lead when she tallied her eighth goal of the season off a corner kick with just under 11 minutes left in the half. Jessie Thomas added a goal at the 39:39 mark, with assists credited to Berklee Watson and Briggs.

Briggs assisted on WT's first goal in the 12th minute, finding Emily Krenek from the top of the box for a goal from the right side.

All five matches so far this season for ENMU (1-4) have resulted in shutouts. The Zias were coming off a 2-0 win in their home opener on Sunday against Adams State.

ENMU hosts Texas Woman's on Friday in a 4 p.m. LSC matchup at the ENMU pitch.
