Portales entries bow out in state individual tennis

ALBUQUERQUE — Portales' representatives in the Class 1A-3A girls and boys individual state tennis tournament each bowed out in quarterfinal matches on Thursday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex.

Eighth-seeded sophomore Emily Walker, who won her first-round match on Wednesday against Hope Christian's Melissa Rosenthal 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, lost on Thursday morning to top-seeded Juliana Guerin of Las Vegas Robertson, who went on to play in Thursday night's championship match. The score of the Walker-Guerin match was not available.

In doubles, senior Kim Spotswood and junior Sabrina Montoya, seeded sixth, were eliminated by the third-seeded Robertson tandem of Urrutia and Gomez 6-0, 6-3. Spotswood and Montoya advanced out of Wednesday's opening round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over a Taos duo.

In boys doubles, junior Mychael Sturm and freshman Austin Luero won their first-round boys doubles match on Wednesday over eighth-seeded Toby Henson and Tyler Vertovec of Raton 6-3, 6-0, then lost in Thursday morning's quarterfinals to the top-seeded and eventual champion team, which is from New Mexico Military, 6-0, 6-0.

The Lady Rams earned an at-large bid for state team competition and are scheduled to play St. Michael's in a 9 a.m. quarterfinal clash today.
