PHS hires Boys basketball coach

Portales stayed inside its program to find its new boys head basketball coach.

Rick McBroom will succeed Mark Gallegos after serving under as six seasons as his assistant.

Gallegos took over as Portales' athletic director in March after 14 years as boys basketball coach.

McBroom has previous head coaching experience with stops at Lordsburg, Moriarty and Aztec. He was selected from among "14 to 15" applicants, according to Gallegos. McBroom was one of six candidates interviewed.

The Rams finished 10-16 last season.
