Clovis woman dies in wreck

A Clovis woman was killed Wednesday morning and three were injured in an accident at the intersection of Seventh and Norris streets.

According to a release from the Clovis Police Department:

  • Crystal Sutherland, 29, died at the scene of the accident, which involved a 2000 Mack concrete mixer truck rolling on top of the rear passenger compartment of a 2011 Toyota two-door passenger car.

  • Also injured were Guadalupe Lopez, the driver of the truck owned by Griego Concrete; Shirley Garcia, the driver of the Toyota; and Susan Trujillo, the front-seat passenger. All three are of Clovis, and were sent to Plains Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.
  • Clovis Police was dispatched about 9:35 a.m. to the scene.
  • The truck was towed to the Texico Port of Entry for inspection by the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, due to the vehicle being a commercial vehicle.
  • The investigation is ongoing. There is no indication of alcohol or drug intoxication, but blood tests were taken voluntarily due to the fatal nature of the crash.

The 2011 Toyota was occupied by a driver, front passenger and back seat passenger. The back seat passenger of the Toyota died at the scene from the blunt force trauma from being crushed under the weight of the loaded concrete truck.
