Meetings watch: ENMU Board of Regents

At the Eastern New Mexico University Board of Regents meeting Tuesday in the Regents Room of the Administration Building, board members:

  • Heard a report from the ENMU-Roswell President John Madden, who said the campus began a program where students sign a pledge that they will finish school. The program was created to put an emphasis on lowering drop-out rates at two-year institutions.

He added the ribbon cutting for a small solar project on campus will take place on May 8, and that the college is moving all student services into the same building.

  • Heard a report from the ENMU-Ruidoso president Clayton Alred.

He said the campus recently held a banquet to celebrate the campus' 20-year anniversary and help kick off a foundation for the college.

He added that the campus had grants approved for students services and Hispanic student services, and that history teacher Cynthia Orozco was appointed to the Texas State Historical Association.

  • Approved a Posthumous Degree for Ruidoso student Vickie Matheny.
  • Approved student learning reorganization at the Ruidoso campus. Several departments will be combined to take the number of academic departments from 11 to five.
  • Approved tenure faculty for Roswell instructors Caleb Cain, instructor of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration; Michael O'Berry, instructor of occupational safety and environmental management; and Rodney Ray, instructor of emergency medical services. All received the award for six years of service.
  • Approved an increase in Distance Education fee. Rates will increase $5 per credit hour for ENMU-Roswell and $10 per credit hour for ENMU-Ruidoso.
  • Approved a new Certificate of Employability Program in Community Paramedic at the Roswell campus. Martyn Clay, provost for academic and student affairs, said the city of Eunice and Taos County will pay the Roswell university for the program's service.

The university is also applying for grants for the program.
