Club notes: April 1

Encanto Garden Club

The Encanto Garden Club met March 14 at Muffley's Back Door in Clovis with President Helen Martinez presiding. She welcomed guests Gladys Birdsong, Myrna Lincoln and Pyper Belcher. Refreshments were served by Carmen Gilchrist. The usual order of business was addressed after Jane Rybolt read the Gardener's Prayer. Plans for the trip to Lubbock's Red Ridinghood Nursery were finalized.

Mays meeting will feature a garden tour at the home of Jeanne Augenstine in Melrose. She gave a hands-on demonstration for starting seeds to obtain the best results whether in pots or the ground. Everyone took their experiment home in anticipation of new flower and vegetable plants to be out within a few weeks.

Jacque Wuest gave an interesting talk, showing the group a lovely quilt. The blocks illustrated the code messages that assisted runaway slaves in finding the safest direction to go in their flight to freedom. This quilt was given to Jacque by master quilter Elizabeth Lawrence of Portales.

Curry County Extension Clubs

The Curry County Extension Clubs will start an exercise program in April that is open to the general public. Join the fun and get healthier every Monday and Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the extension office at 818 N. Main in Clovis. For information contact the extension office at 762-0296 or 763-6505.

PRMC Auxiliary

Fifty members and guests attended the Plains Regional Medical Center Auxiliary annual awards banquet March 20 at the Days Inn in Clovis.

President Paula Johnston introduced guests State President Donya Conine and PRMC Administrator Hoyt Skabelund "as our great supporter." Skabelund spoke about service, saying "if you don't give, you shrivel up and die." Skabelund read the words of the hymn "Have I Done Any Good in the World Today."

Skabelund presented Charlotte Ogilvie an inscribed New Mexico Nambe bowl, a symbol of New Mexico's heritage, and Johnston presented Ogilvie a floral arrangement in honor of being selected Auxilian of the Year.

Donya Conine spoke about how all auxilians are alike but yet different. Each auxiliary does something unique that makes us special.

Judy Kern, president elect, announced the upcoming Book Fair April 19-20 and the Tea and Style Show April 28.
