Zias drop pair in tournament

SAN ANTONIO — Reliever Monica Cavazos worked around a pair of one-out walks in the bottom of the seventh to nail down a save as Texas A&M International held off Eastern New Mexico University 5-4 on Friday in the St. Mary's Division II College Classic softball tournament.

ENMU (1-3), which split a pair of games on Thursday, then dropped a 9-5 decision to St. Edward's in a later game. The Zias close out the event today with games against Abilene Christian and Southeastern Oklahoma at 9 and 11 a.m. (MST), respectively.

International (1-2) scored three runs in the top of the first off ENMU starter Katie Ramsey. Freshman Amy Smith relieved Ramsay in the fifth and finished with 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief, and she also pulled the Zias within a run with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth.

St. Edward's opened a 9-2 lead with a four-run fifth against the Zias. Third baseman Ally Valdez went 3-for-3 for St. Ed's, with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Catcher Aurelia Sandoval went 2-for-4 for the Zias, including a two-run single which capped a three-run fifth. Smith also had two hits.

Freshman Albie Medina (1-1), the first of four ENMU pitchers, took the loss.
