Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met on Nov. 9 with President Teresa Howard, presiding. The Collect was led by Howard, the pledges led by Rosalee Richards, and Mary Lou Rowley gave the invocation. There were 23 members and two guests present.

The minutes from the October meeting were approved as corrected, and the treasurer’s report was filed. Della Kobernick won the door prize. A thank you letter was read from the Christian Childrens Home and an oral thank you was given from the Baptist Childrens Home for recent contributions from the club.

Anne McMath reported on the success of the peanut booth at the annual Peanut Festival and thanked those who worked. A gift basket, donated by Lois Crozier, was won by Patty Schroeder. The monies go towards the Scholarship fund for the club.

Patrice Tompkins, Civic Chair, asked for volunteers to make cookies for the Mayor’s Blessing Tree in December. She also announced that the annual Women’s Day Out will be April 21. Doncella Caywood reported on the District III convention and announced that all of the club’s entries in the Fine Arts department won first place, and the club’s scrapbook won Best of Show.

Beth Davis, program chair, presented the Historical Moment regarding the origin of the city’s library.

Caywood, chair of the hostess committee, introduced others on her committee: Sondra Myers, Linda Leaming and Phyllis Jones.

Following the close of the business meeting, Jan Smartnick introduced Amy Jordan who presented a program on her personal experience with religion. A certificate of appreciation was given to Jordan. The next meeting will be on Dec. 14.

Altrusa of Portales

The Altrusa International, Inc. Club of Portales met Nov. 14 in the Central Annex. President Gaynelle Thomas, called the meeting to order. There were 22 members present and two guests. Sharon Davis led the opening ceremonies. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were approved.

Judy Piepkorn drew for the Queen of Hearts. Beverly Bennett shared some words of wisdom, and Bette Martinez asked for help in pricing items to be sold at Holiday Happening.

Davis was elected from the local club to be nominated for the District 10 Nominating Committee. Members were asked to save Betty Crocker coupons for Education, and a vote will be taken on the International website at the next meeting.

Linda Leaming introduced Wendy Toombs, owner of Abrazos Adventure, and she told stories about past students and how horseback riding had helped them in numerous ways. The president presented her with a certificate of appreciation following the presentation.

Nellie Dyer, vice president, announced that the next club meeting would be on Nov. 28 and the speaker will be State Rep. Dennis Roche, who will talk about literacy.

Altrusa of Clovis

Altrusa International of Clovis held their monthly evening meeting Nov. 14 at Muffley’s Back Door. Hostesses Pat McCullough and Narcy Tucker prepared a delicious meal.

President Kathy Travis called the meeting to order, and welcomed guest, Carolyn Leinberger. Others in attendance were: Stephanie Miller, Emily Crowe, Sylvia Bean, Margaret Blazek, Judith Glikas and Mary Weigl.

Discussion was held on creating the club’s new website and Emily Crowe was voted to be the web master. The Christmas party was announced to be on Dec. 12 and discussion followed about the food and entertainment.

The next business meeting will be held on Nov. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at ABS Accounting Office.

The Chaparral Extension Club

The Chaparral Extension Club met Nov. 10 at Trinity Lutheran Church with eight members attending.

Sheryl Abdill called the meeting to order. Jeanetta Mesner read “Curtain Rods.” Dorothy Bean gave the treasurers report.

Abdill gave a report on the council meeting. New officers for club: President Sheryl Abdill, Vice President Jeanetta Mesner, Secretary June Phillips and Treasurer Linda Roberts.

Tickets were sold for the Annual Banquet on Nov. 17.

The group planned their Christmas party for Dec. 8 and voted to donate money to the police department for shopping trips with kids. Next year’s meetings were discussed.

The group enjoyed a sack lunch, then Mesner and Abdill presented a slide show of the inside of rocks that has been collected and prepared by their Grandpa Ross, who has a display in a rock museum in Wyoming.
