Freedom New Mexico

The Clovis Music Festival is throwing its annual party to celebrate the city’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage. The festival was originated by Clovis recording giant Norman Petty’s widow, Vi.

The event is held annually the first week of September and showcases live music celebrating the spirit of the “Clovis sound.”

The festivities will take place Sept. 8-11 and tickets are available at the Curry County Chamber of Commerce at 105 E. Grand Ave.

The Clovis Chamber of Commerce office has extended its hours of operation to include noon to 1 p.m. so local residents can stop by during lunch breaks to get tickets, call 762-3435 or visit http://www.clovismusicfestival.net.

Tickets are $20 for Thursday and Friday nights and $25 for Saturday night.

Opening night will feature “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” at 7 p.m. at Marshall Auditorium.

All other concerts are held at the Curry County Events Center.

This year’s lineup includes Lonestar, Will Banister and the Mulberry Band, The Fireballs, The Liverpool Legends and Tommy Allsup.

Buddy Holly recorded many of his songs in the Norman Petty Recording Studio. Petty was considered Holly’s recording engineer.

The Buddy Holly Story centers on three years in which Holly became the world’s top recording artist. It features at least 20 of Holly’s greatest hits, including “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be The Day,” “Oh Boy,” “Not Fade Away,” “Everyday,” “Rave On,” “Maybe Baby” and “Raining In My Heart.”

More than 20 million people from around the world have come to see Holly and experience the talent of the young man with his glasses named Charles Hardin ‘Buddy’ Holly.

The show is a celebration of a legend and catches a unique mixture of innocence, determination, charm and humor. Promoters call it the world’s most successful rock ‘n’ roll musical.
