Fatal crash involving officer still under investigation

Freedom New Mexico

A report on a Nov. 17 officer involved fatal crash was not available Friday, according to Clovis Police records personnel.

Thursday, police Chief Steve Sanders said investigators planned to meet with the district attorney Friday morning to review the case and determine if Officer Steve Gallegos would face criminal charges or citations for the crash.

Following that review, Sanders said he expected the case would be passed on to prosecutors, the police investigation closed and records related to the crash made available to the public.

A records clerk said Friday afternoon the investigation was still classified as ongoing and the reports were not available for dissemination.

Neither Sanders or District Attorney Matt Chandler could be reached for comment Friday.

Sanders has said previously that a preliminary investigation indicated Gallegos ran a stop sign, crashing into a pickup truck at the intersection of Sycamore Street and Grand Avenue.

Mary Castillo, 56, a passenger in the pickup, died at a Lubbock hospital Nov. 18, the day after the crash.

The driver of the pickup, 40-year-old Edith Payton of Clovis, has been transferred from a Lubbock hospital to rehabilitative care.
