Ex-Wildcat helps Nevada upset No. 3 Boise State

Yes, that was the same Rishard Matthews who scored 20 touchdowns as a junior at Clovis High School six years ago who helped Nevada upset No. 3 Boise State 34-31 in overtime Friday.

Matthews caught 10 passes for 172 yards in Friday’s game, including a 7-yard touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick with 13 seconds left that sent the game into overtime. He also scored on a 44-yard run for the No. 19 Wolfpack.

In his first season at Nevada, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior has caught 48 passes for 788 yards and four TDs. He leads the team in catches, receiving yards and yards per catch (16.4).

Matthews abruptly left Clovis one game into his senior season and enrolled at Saddleback High School in Santa Ana, Calif., where he earned all-state honors. He verbally committed to Oregon while at Saddleback, but did not play for the Ducks.

He played last season at Bakersfield (Calif.) College.
