New Mexicans urged to take cold weather precautions

The National Weather Service is predicting extreme cold temperatures in parts of New Mexico during the Thanksgiving weekend holiday. The state’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management issued a press release suggesting a few simple things motorists can do to prepare for bad weather.

Here’s a sampling:

Drivers are urged to check their antifreeze levels, battery and ignition system, brakes, the exhaust system, fuel and air filters, heater and defroster, lights, oil, thermostat and window washer equipment.

Install good winter tires and make sure that tires have adequate tread. “All weather radials are usually adequate for most New Mexico winter driving conditions,” according to Cabinet Secretary John W. Wheeler, who adds that “you should have at least a half tank of gas during the winter season.”

Having a winter emergency kit with a shovel, windshield scraper and small broom, flashlight, battery powered radio, extra batteries, water, snack food, matches, extra hats, socks and mittens are advised. Additional items for emergency use include a First Aid kit, pocket knife, necessary medications, a blanket, tow chain or rope, road salt and sand, booster cables, emergency flares and a fluorescent flag.

Make sure your emergency kit has provisions for infants, small children and the elderly.

If you plan on traveling with the family pet you should plan and prepare ahead of time for this member of the family. Make sure the pet has an ID tag, collar and leash. Make sure you have pet food, adequate water and any medication the animal needs. Take a pet carrier and favorite toy to help ease anxiety and keep your pet safe.
