The Curry County Events Center plays host this weekend to the Western Shooting Horse “Road to the Worlds” competition.

The event is set for Saturday and Sunday at the Curry County Events Center, and is a week before the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association’s Worlds competition.

The Mounted Shooting All-Stars Show is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, but the riders will be at the events center throughout Saturday and Sunday for competition events.

The event is organized by Ken Amorosano, publisher of Western Shooting Horse Magazine in Tijeras. He said he offered 10 male and 10 female riders the chance at cash prizes through the shows. In return, he gets to grow the sport he covers and his business — every paid ticket receives a one-year subscription to his magazine.

“The draw is they’re going to see the best of the best,” Amorosano said. “Not only do you have the best riders, but you have the best horses.

“There’s a great saying that you can shoot off any horse once, but it’s a guess about the second time. They’re totally unaffected by gunfire.”

The riders shoot 10 balloon targets while navigating obstacles, using specially-loaded blank cartridges fired from Old West-style single-action revolvers.

Tickets are $10, and available in advance at Joe’s Boot Shop in Clovis.
