WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University made third-ranked Midwestern State work for most of the match before the Mustangs pulled away late for a 4-0 Lone Star Conference men’s soccer victory Friday night.
The Mustangs (9-0, 2-0 LSC) limited the 23rd-ranked Greyhounds (7-3-1, 2-1-1) to four shots for the match, including one on goal. Still, MSU managed a 1-0 before getting three goals in the final 23 minutes.
Bryce Taylor assisted Tex McCullough on the night’s first goal in the 15th minute, then Taylor made it 2-0 in the 68th minute with his fourth goal of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Orlando Rodriguez fended off 11 shots on goal for the Hounds. David Freeland had a pair of assists for the Mustangs.
Midwestern 1, ENMU 0 (women) — In the first half of the doubleheader, the Zias also made their MSU counterparts work hard, but Kelsey Hill broke through with her eighth goal of the season in the 57th minute in the LSC women’s matchup.
Midwestern State (9-1, 4-0 LSC), ranked 21st in NCAA Division II, fired off 26 shots for the match to four for the Zias, but only six of the Mustangs’ attempts were on goal. ENMU goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas made five saves.
It was the fifth match of the season decided by one goal for the Zias (3-8, 0-4).
