After battling Lone Star Conference rival Incarnate Word to a 2-2 tie in double overtime on Friday in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team had trouble matching that effort on Sunday.
St. Edward’s rallied for three goals in the final 25 minutes to post a 3-1 win over the Greyhounds, who earned a No. 17 ranking last week in NCAA Division II, at the ENMU pitch.
ENMU (7-2-1) dodged a bullet when two headers by St. Edwards’ Daniel Riley bounced off the goalpost and freshman Chris Seridan then made a save on a shot by Troy Perkins off the rebound in the 37th minute.
Four minutes later, freshman midfielder Andy Wilkinson split the St. Ed’s defense with a through pass to sophomore midfielder Kal Herbert, whose shot banked off the far goalpost and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Joeski Williams assisted Alex Weaver on the Hilltoppers’ tying goal with about 19 minutes left, then put St. Ed’s (5-4) ahead with nine minutes left. Perkins added an insurance goal with under three minutes remaining.
ENMU returns to LSC play on Friday with a 7 p.m. (MDT) matchup against Midwestern State at Wichita Falls, Texas.
Lions blank Zias — ENMU’s women played even with Texas A&M-Commerce until well into the second half Sunday before the Lions scored twice for a 2-0 LSC victory.
The Zias (3-7, 0-3 LSC) outshot Commerce 6-1 in the first half, but were outshot 9-1 in the second. The Lions broke through in the 59th minute when Chelsey Height headed int a corner kick from Megan Monroe to break the scoreless tie.
Commerce got an insurance tally about six minutes later when Elie DeFreitas banked in a shot off the far post.
The Zias return to action on Friday in a 3 p.m. (MDT) clash at Midwestern State.
Rodeo teams compete at Sul Ross — ENMU’s women finished sixth while the men were ninth over the weekend in the Sul Ross State rodeo at Alpine, Texas.
Sophomore Jessie Kirkes and freshman Mackie Saavedra split fifth and sixth in the average in breakaway roping for the women, while Kirkes split third through sixth place in the first go.
Most of the points for the men came in team roping, where sophomores Chance Kiehne and Michael Trujillo, the defending College National Finals Rodeo champions, placed fifth in the first-go and ENMU’s Logan Medlin teamed with New Mexico Junior College’s R.H. Witten for second in the first go. Also, Jesse Clark was sixth for the Greyhounds in calf-roping.
ENMU’s squads return to action beginning Thursday in the Vernon College rodeo.
