My turn: Brooks delivers surprise of a lifetime

Think back to January 1993.

If you attended the “Yukon Jack” concert at the Clovis City Limits bar, then you got the shock of a lifetime when Garth Brooks appeared on stage. That surprise concert made national news, and the CBS News interview is this week’s video selection.

In an interview that lasted almost six minutes, former KSEL radio personality Steve Richie and then Program Director Cheryl Ray describe to CBS the complete silence that befell the crowd when Yukon Jack was announced to the stage, and Garth Brooks appeared.

Richie said he had his suspicions that something wasn’t right, when sound crews began bringing in a lot of equipment, including a sound board which cost somewhere around the $20,000 to $30,000 range.

“Something’s wrong here, this is too much equipment for a club this size,” Richie told the anchor.

Brooks played for about 90 minutes, and signed autographs for the crowd for about three hours afterward.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time.
