Best of show selected at fair

On day two of the Roosevelt County Fair, area residents entered their best arts, crafts, food and other items in 16 categories to be judged for awards, but only the best got the title, “Best of Show.”

Portales Police Detective Kirk Wilson was surprised to learn he took best of show in photography. Wilson said his family encouraged him to enter his dramatic picture of last year’s Dollar General Store fire.

“While a lot of people were taking pictures of the fire or of the building, I wanted to capture more of the personal involvement of the firefighters and the people who were there,” Wilson said.

Wilson said he wasn’t serious about photography until about a year ago, when he and his wife bought high quality camera equipment to capture memories of their new baby.

On the tasty side of the contest, 12-year-old Elida resident Kynzi Creighton took best of show with her peach pie in the 4-H category.

Creighton said her ultimate goal is to enter her pies into the state fair contest, where they can be sold. Crieghton has been baking pies and other sweet treats for about four years, she said, and has a great time cooking and baking.

“But it’s even more fun to eat it,” Creighton said, adding she chose a peach pie because peaches are her favorite fruit.

There were so many entries in each category the totals of each haven’t been added up yet, according to Connie Moyers, who coordinates the fair contests.

“It’s similar to last year. I can’t tell you exactly how many, but it’s close,” Moyers said about the number of entries this year compared to 2009.

Moyers said the entries are judged on the overall quality, appearance and if it’s food, the taste. Each category generally has one judge each, but some departments required two judges.

Moyers said all best of show winners received $15, and their entries get displayed in the Best of Show case in the fine arts building.
