Police: Holiday stabbing spills over at store

A man stabbed during a Fourth of July fight at Greene Acres Park was stabbed again Saturday night during a fight at Clovis’ Wal-Mart, said the Clovis Police Department.

Chief Steve Sanders said Carlos Lopez is in stable condition at Plains Regional Medical Center and the suspect has been taken into custody.

Lopez, 26, received a non-life threatening stab wound during a fight at the community fireworks program in July. Police said he was uncooperative with the investigation and no arrests were made in connection with the incident.

Saturday night, Sanders said Lopez and a man who may have been involved in the previous incident encountered each other at Wal-Mart, exchanged words and a fight broke out in the store.

“All I can say is it’s a bleed over from the conflict at the park. We believe it’s over the same conflict,” he said.

“There’s obviously a conflict between these two groups and in this particular case they came out with the knives and somebody got hurt.”

Sanders said store security was instrumental in helping police detain the suspects.

Police believe there were others involved and detectives are investigating the incident, he said.
