Any dad can be best kind of dad

With Father’s Day upon us, I got to thinking about different kinds of dads. Their names come from their habits and what they do.

For instance there’s Garage Dad, he spends a lot of his free time in his garage tinkering with vehicles. Garage Dad can sometimes be heard yelling for his wife to come get the kids if they’re bothering him too much.

There’s Handyman Dad, with his endless list of projects around the house that have to get done. Handyman Dad is sometimes confused with Garage Dad because he too yells for the missus when the kids are in his way.

When I was a kid moms generally kept kids away from Garage Dads and Handyman Dads so they wouldn’t learn keen “new words.”

There are a few more types of dads. There’s workaholic Work Dad, TV Dad who’s always watching sports while tightly clutching the remote, Drinking Dad (self-explanatory), Fitness Dad, who always seems to be running away, and Gone Dad who’s just … gone.

But then there’s the best dad of all: Family Man Dad. Family Man Dad may be in the garage working on something but at the same time he’s showing his kid what he’s working on and how he’s going to fix it. If Family Man Dad is doing a home project, he’s explaining to his kid the importance of the proper way to use a drill. Family Man Dad goes to the games, talks to his children and does stuff like fix flat bicycle tires.

We are all works in progress. So if you don’t think you’re a mighty fine dad, well, this weekend might be a good time to start. It’s like one of my favorite sayings, supposedly a Turkish proverb: “No matter how far you’ve gone down a wrong road, turn back.”
