Cannon celebrates fathers

Father’s Day is never overlooked at Cannon Air Force Base. Often, families are separated for long periods of time because of their military service, especially fathers.

This year, the 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron has events planned for families to celebrate their fathers and for fathers to celebrate on their own.

Yolanda Romero, Force Support Squadron marketing department director, said Father’s Day is sometimes undercelebrated compared to Mother’s Day.

“We want to do the same for moms and dads,” she said.

Romero said family time is treasured in military communities because of the time spent apart.

“This is a time we can reflect and thank dad for the things they do every day,” Romero said. “With dads deployed a lot, this is another occasion that they can celebrate with their dad.”

Romero said the Father’s Day Golf Tourney is a highly attended each year. This year, participating fathers have a chance to win a 2011 Hyundai Sonata.

“It’s a nice way to kick off Father’s Day events,” Romero said of the tourney.

A special brunch menu, free bowling and the tourney have prizes association with them. At the brunch, fathers can register to win a grill.
