June 10, 1945: Portales’ American Legion dance, held in the Safeway parking lot, raised $451.03. “There was about as many people on the lot as could dance and the sidelines were crowded with onlookers,” The Portales Daily News reported. “There were no disturbances and everyone seemed to have a good time.”
