Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
On the morning of May 1, 75 horsemen and women from New Mexico and Texas set off on the Ride for Life trail ride at the Lazy LB Ranch at San Jon. This marked the 11th year the horseback team, as a part of the Clovis Relay for Life, has raised money for the American Cancer Society.
This is an activity for all members of the family with the youngest rider only 4-years old and the oldest 82.
Elmer and Kelly Boney, owners of the Lazy LB Ranch, offered it as a place to ride in memory of Karen Mitchell. The ride itself was dedicated to the memory of Tucumcari’s Temple O. Lynch, 1931-2010. His wife, a granddaughter and her children spent the day at camp with members of the trail ride.
Team Captain Amber Workheiser, who ‘took the reins’ in 2008, rode in loving memory of her mother, Shirley White. Over the last three years, Workheiser has seen the ride grow from 28 riders and donations of $18,000 to 70 riders and contributions of $27,890 this year.
Jennifer Starkey of Clovis won the saddle donated by Joe’s Boot Shop and Trans-matic Wrecker. It was awarded to the person collecting the most contributions within the team — $3,105.00.
