ENMU's Draper 11th in Division II javelin

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Eastern New Mexico University junior Daniel Draper finished 11th in men’s javelin competition on Saturday at the NCAA Division II national championships, hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.

Draper, ENMU’s lone contestant at nationals, threw 187 feet even and earned the top finish for an ENMU athlete at the nationals, bettering Kyle Harris’ 14th-place finish in triple jump last year and a 16th-place showing in javelin by Zach Gerleve in 2007. Draper, a Moriarty High grad, was 10 1/2 feet out of sixth, the last scoring position in the event.

He entered the meet seeded 15th out of 16, but made his fifth-best throw of the season to move ahead of four others who came in ranked ahead of him.

Sophomore Nick Howe of UC San Diego won the event with a throw of 225 feet. Junioe Mike Beeler of Pittsburg State was second at 219-4, while Angelo State junior Raymond Orlando placed third at 216-0.
