As part of its ongoing prevention activities, the Portales/Roosevelt County DWI program has initiated graduation activities designed to remind graduates not to drink and drive.
Such activities include collaboration with Curry County and De Baca counties to provide continuous DWI messages to graduates and other members of the community throughout the days of graduation and through the Memorial Day holiday.
Another activity includes tuxedo tags hanging from every tuxedo rented from Robert De los Santos and Beall’s department store for proms and Maypole.
Donna Hammons, chairperson of the English department at Portales Junior High School, agreed to help her seventh- and eighth-grade students write a personal letter to each graduating senior.
The students researched the DWI problem in New Mexico and wrote personal letters to each graduating senior asking them not to drink and drive or engage in other risky behaviors as part of their graduation activities.
The seniors will receive the letters when they report for commencement practice.
