eceived a “distinguished club” award at the Altrusa District 10 conference for contributions it made to our community by providing services such as eyeglasses; SANE donations; items for victims of violence; literacy projects; coat drive, and contributions to the schools during the 2009-2010 year.

In addition, a memorial service was held for Altrusa sister Marline Haughawaut, a Portales Altrusa member.

The Altrusa District 10 conference was held in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 30 to May 1and attended by three Portales Altrusans: Frankye King, Wanda Pettus, and Yvette Howl.

Fifteen Altrusa clubs from Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico were represented by 83 attendees.

Inspirational and informative speakers highlighted the conference.

Bryon Embry, a former professional baseball player for several ball clubs, titled his talk “Mountain Top” and spoke about his speech impediment, which a thoughtful college instructor helped him overcome. He challenged us to conquer any situation that might prevent us from reaching our “Mountain Top”.

Dr. Kathleen Wells: “Your Path to the Gold,” Michele Lewis and Christie Coker spoke on ways we can revitalize and energize ourselves to become a more effective volunteer for our respective communities.

The conference ended with the Governor’s Banquet on Saturday evening and closed with comments from District Governor Ida Bender and International Director Terri Houston.

An invitation from the Montrose, Colo., club was issued to attend the district conference in May 2011. Rapid City, S.D., will host the 2011 International Convention.
