Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Where do you go if you want to recycle metal, cardboard or that old personal computer?
Not too far if you live in Portales or Clovis.
Ed’s Recycling Center, Inc., in Clovis recycles almost any kind of metal. Mike Lingnau and his dad, Ed Lingau, have owned the business for 14 years.
“We recycle anything from aluminum cans to old vehicles,” Lingnau said. “All lead acid batteries, stainless steel and corrugated cardboard, which is the only paper product we touch.”
Lingnau said they can buy from one pound to a semi-load.
Ed’s doesn’t take oil, refrigerants, tires, rubber or plastics and all vehicles must have a title.
Lingnau said the strangest thing that someone brought in to recycle was a mule-driven truck.
“Basically, he took the motor out of it and put some gears in it,” Lingnau said. “He had a cage in the back and he put a mule back there with a treadmill. He had a mule to walk and it made the vehicle go. It was definitely interesting to see a vehicle ran by a mule.”
Blake’s Computer Center is the place to take old computers, monitors or printers. They repair them, then donate the items to people in need.
“We donated them to churches and...organizations that can use them,” Owner Howard Blake said. “They’re not state of the art. They may not be business capable...(but) they’re still usable. We’d rather fix them up and give them to people than put them in the landfill.”
Blake said the Matt 25 Center also accepts old computers.
Roosevelt/Curry Counties Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Portales take similar donations. The Re-Store takes usable appliances, lumber if usable, cinder blocks and bricks.
“If it is re-sellable, we have the Re-Store in Portales,” Habitat For Humanity Office Manager Marge Rhode said. “If it something we can use at a home we are currently building, like a truck load of lumber. We do accept donations for the build. We don’t like to use materials that are way out of our standards for what we use to build.”
Rhode said the organization can pick-up large donations.
For trash, shrubs, trees and certain metals, the Portales Convenience Center is another option. But there are limits to how much they can take.
“We don’t like big loads because we are a small convenience center,” Larry Chavez, Superintendent for the Sanitation Department, said. “We take trailer loads of stuff, but dump truck loads and stuff like that we prefer they take that to Clovis because we’re not set up to take big loads.”
