Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
During their meeting Tuesday, Roosevelt County Commissioners:
• Commissioner Jake Lopez reported the county received a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for the Los Abuelitos Senior Center.
• County Manager Charlene Hardin said the general manager of gravel company Four Corners Materials Inc. told her he was 95 percent sure the company would give the county a building for the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds. The county has been working with the company to acquire the building.
The company offered it for free to a non-profit organization that would pay to have it moved from Colorado. A decision is expected by the end of the month.
Hardin said the building is large, and she expects it could stay rented out.
• Hardin said contractors from Heflin Construction believe the concrete area in the county courthouse parking lot is cracking because pickup trucks with heavy trailers are pulling in there and applying more weight than the concrete was designed to hold. However, she said the company will take a sample to make sure the concrete is the correct type.
• Awarded a bid for road materials to Western Emulsions.
• Awarded a bid for new protective firefighting gear for the Arch Fire Department to L.N. Curtis and Sons.
• Approved an annual resolution for participation in the Eastern Plains Council of Governments. Hardin said the council was still having internal problems but its services to the county have been better than in the past few years.
• Sheriff Darren Hooker said he hoped his office would be operating from the old National Guard armory by May 18.
• County Clerk Janet Collins said early voting in the primary election started Tuesday, which was also the last day to register to vote.
• Collins also said signs around town urging residents to register Republican and listing her office number were put up by the party, not by her.
