Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Letter to the editor: Seidenwurm doesn’t deserve attacks

Seidenwurm doesn’t deserve attacks

I’ve been a physician in this community nearly 30 years. Much of my service has been to our Hispanic and minority population.

We’ve raised two children through the Clovis schools, a system that supported them and helped them become successful adults. Both are fluent in English and Spanish; their mother is Hispanic and a dedicated pharmacist.

She is founder and administrator of a nursing home home and health care agency, who has given her life to her community, helping the Hispanic and minority population.

She serves as role model to her people and has observed the accomplishments of school Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm. I have served on committees with Seidenwurm and members of her staff. I have admired her commitment to taking on difficult challenges on behalf of our students.

I talk with many people in our community. They do not tell me our schools are racist institutions. In fact, they appreciate our schools.

For these reasons, I am dismayed and embarrassed at the attacks Seidenwurm is suffering at the hands of people who claim to be representing the Hispanic community.

These people are playing politics with our school system. They claim Seidenwurm and her administration discriminate against minority applicants, and yet the number and percentage of minority administrators has increased in the years she has been here.

They claim she is cutting programs and services to poor children, and that is simply not the truth.

I fear this personal vendetta against Seidenwurm will cast a bad light on her, our school system and the minority population. Neither she, nor the schools, deserve this kind of criticism.

Seidenwurm shouldn’t have to take time away from her important job to defend herself.
