CLOVIS — Farmers’ Electric Cooperative of Clovis is receiving a $28.1 million loan to upgrade its electric delivery system for seven counties in eastern New Mexico and three in Texas.

The cooperative will use the money to expand service to current customers and extend service to new customers.

It also will replace old electric poles and wires and upgrade other infrastructure to provide additional electric capacity to meet demand.

Farmers’ Electric Cooperative provides electricity to more than 7,200 members in an 11,000-square-mile area that includes parts of Curry, DeBaca, Guadalupe, Harding, Quay, Roosevelt and San Miguel counties in New Mexico and Deaf Smith, Oldham and Parmer counties in Texas.

The loan comes the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development’s electric loan program.
