Take me out to the ballgame

I’m not a sports aficionado. Nothing personal toward those who dig sports, I just never “got it.” For instance I was reportedly the only kid in my junior high school’s history that enabled an opposing softball team to get a triple play. I also caught the football during a high school gym class game and ran for a touchdown only to find out I was in the wrong end zone.

But I do like a good baseball game, I don’t know why, I just do.

Now I don’t feel the same way about football. Once I went to a NFL game in a big city football stadium. The seats were way up, so high the players looked like dots running around on a green field. We needed binoculars to see the action. I fell asleep just before halftime.

Baseball is different to me. I remember watching the Albuquerque Dukes play on a sunny spring afternoon. I thought it was a great day to watch a ballgame, something about as All-American as you can get.

“How about the next time we go to Albuquerque we go see the Isotopes play?” I asked The Lady of the House.

“I’ve heard of the Isotopes. Aren’t they hockey or something?”

She said from behind her paper. “I don’t do sports.”

“It’s not sports, it’s like…a social activity,” I said.

The Lady of the House put down her paper and looked over the top of her glasses. “A social activity is where people get together, face each other and talk. Sports is watching men and balls doing things.

Next thing we know you’ll want cable so you can watch ESPN.”

Our sports discussion was over.

Hope springs eternal just like “the boys of summer” on the baseball diamond, so who knows? We may go to a game yet.
