I heard about a child who is having some neurological difficulty.
Because of the child's condition and the family's lack of answers from other doctors, the parents took their 8-year-old to a huge facility in a metropolitan area, where the latest of medical diagnostic equipment is readily available.
This facility has an MRI that is one of the few if its kind in the world. This machine allows doctors to view even more accurate images of the brain than older MRI's.
This marvelous medical machine is exceptional because it provides a very defined and precise view of the brain. If a patient has a neurological problem or brain tumor, a surgeon can stop during surgery, the machine scans the area and the surgeon can glean that information from the machine to obtain an accurate view and diagnosis. Then the surgery proceeds.
What makes it have such ability to be so precise? This MRI possesses a powerful magnet that allows it to capture the most difficult and finite images. It is so powerful that with this machine, areas of the brain can be seen, even down to the most minute part.
Why? It is in the powerful magnet of the machine and its ability related to capturing the pictures. It has such a powerful magnet that the magnet can pull at hairpin at 40 mph.
How that works, I don't know but reports are the $9.7 million marvel signals a new medical frontier — all because it exposes areas of the brain never seen before.
For Christians, the Bible is like that.
When a person reads the Bible, it exposes things to us that we could never know about ourselves. It exposes the troubled areas in our lives.
When I read about people who have had the same struggles that I have had, it seems to mirror my life and then I have hope.
When I read Sarah's story and how her lack of patience caused her take matters in her own hands and trouble followed, I remember times when my lack of patience and faith caused me to do things out of God's will.
When I read James' words about gossip, I am convicted of that “tale” I passed on as a prayer concern.
When I read about doing good deeds, I think back about the day and think about how materialistic I have been.
When I read the wise man in proverbs who admonishes me to walk with the wise and not imitate the ungodly, I remember again that I am a child of God and I must act like it.
When I read about Christ coming in to the world, I remember again that I need a Savior and that is why years ago I accepted Him on a personal level.
Yes, the Bible is a diagnostic tool as well as a marvelous encouraging word. God's Word when read reveals a picture of our intentions and our hearts.
It is just as it is written:
“But prove you doers of the word, and not merely hearers … for if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.” James 1:22-25.
I thank God for modern medicine and machines like the MRI that will help to treat my friend's friend.
But I also thank God for the Bible; it's words are ancient but just as relevant and appropriate for the modern reader as it was centuries ago.
