Cannon schedules Earth Day activities

Earth Day, a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment, is celebrated on April 22. It was founded by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson, D-Wisconsin, as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. The first Earth Day in the United States was in 1970.

The 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron’s Natural Resources Management Flight has sponsored an annual Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration since 1992 and earned Tree City USA status since 1998, a total of 12 awards.

This year’s primary activities will include:

• An Earth Day 5K Fun Run at 7 a.m. at Unity Park. A traveling plaque will be presented to the squadron with the most participation and there will be prizes to the top male and female finishers.

• A Tree City USA Ceremony and tree planting at 10 a.m. at Green Zone.

• Information booths will be set up at the Base Exchange 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., to provide information on recycling and other environmental programs. Promotional items made from recycled products will be handed out to visitors and there will be displays.

• A story telling and crafts event will be held 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. Base personnel will read to children about Earth Day followed by a craft session.
