Fire departments battle Sunday grassfire

Ten eastern New Mexico fire departments helped fight a grass fire in Curry County on Sunday.

Portales, Floyd, Elida, Dora and Arch firefighters and Roosevelt County Road Department personnel worked on a blaze that was caused by a lightning strike and burned about 6,400 acres of sandy range land along North Curry Road 4 from Curry Road Y to Curry Road AE, said Floyd Fire Chief Allen Deen.

Crews from Melrose, Texico, Clovis, Grady and Field also assisted.

No one was injured, and no structures were harmed.

The fire started about 3 p.m., and firefighters worked for about seven hours to put it out, Deen said.

He said Roosevelt County crews worked with personnel from two Curry County fire departments to extinguish that blaze.

Other Curry County firefighters handled a larger one that occurred just east of Curry Road Y at the same time, Deen said. The larger fire started as two fires but merged into one.
