ENMU takes women's title at Western Texas College Rodeo

SNYDER, Texas — Freshman Jessie Kirkes of Carlsbad was the all-around champion, helping Eastern New Mexico Unversity take the women’s team title in the Western Texas College Rodeo over the weekend.

The Zias finished with 270 team points to 140 for Tarleton State and 120 for West Texas College in a field of 10 teams. Kirkes took breakaway roping and goat tying competition in the meet, finishing first in the short go and the average in breakaway roping and fourth in the first go, first in the short go and first in average in goat tying.

Meantime, ENMU junior Brian Johnson was the men’s all-around champion, placing fifth in team roping with partner Nick Becker and sixth in calf roping in the average and the short go.

Other results for the men, junior Jacob Gerentz tookfirst in steer wrestling after taking third in the first go and second in the short go; freshman Chance Kiehne and Mike Trujillo finished second in team roping after taking third in the first go and second in the short go, and senior Cole Jackson split fourth and fifth in the first go of steer wrestling.

ENMU squads return to action in the Howard College Rodeo, scheduled to begin on April 15 at Big Spring, Texas.
