ENMU athletes set several school records

ABILENE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University set four team records Thursday as the Greyhounds placed fourth in men’s competition and the Zias finished 11th on the women’s side in the 20-team McMurry Relays track meet.

For the men, junior Brian Smith placed third in the 100 in an ENMU-record time of 10.59 seconds. Meantime, sophomore Bill Squire set another mark in discus, placing seventh with a throw of 157-6 1/2 inches.

Squire also had a second-place finish in hammer throw with a toss of 175-5.

Smith’s performance could have earned him a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II outdoor nationals later this spring, but it didn’t count towards that because of windy conditions.

ENMU came away with a 2-3 finish in javelin with freshman Anthony Anderson (187-3) and junior Daniel Draper (182-1).

For the Zias, sophomore Nicole Reid set a pair of records, placing third in the 1,500 in 5:07.05 and third in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 12:10.51.

The Hounds finished with 64 team points to trail McMurry (138), Tarleton State (101) and Southwest Christian (76). The women tallied 27 points, with McMurry also taking that division with 106 points to 93 for West Texas A&M.

ENMU’s next outing is a week from today when it begins a two-day competition at Angelo State.
