LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Suffice it to say, nothing Eastern New Mexico University tried on Tuesday worked.
The Greyhounds had only six baserunners in a 21-0 loss to New Mexico Highlands, and stranded just one of them. Three were erased on double plays, another on a pickoff and another on a caught-stealing.
Meantime, the 10th-ranked Cowboys (18-5) feasted on an ENMU pitching staff which just finished playing 22 innings over three games on Sunday at Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian. NMHU pounded out 29 hits, led by David Bustillos with 6-for-6, four runs scored and three RBIs and Christian Garcia with 4-for-4 and a walk, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Kyle Gutchewsky hit a two-run homer in Highlands’ four-run third and Oscar Sigala drove in five runs with a three-run homer, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
Center fielder Luis Quinones had two hits for ENMU (14-16), which returns to LSC play with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma at Greyhound Field.
Highlands starter Steven Becerra allowed one hit over four innings, with five relievers each pitching a shutout inning.
Highlands improved to 4-1 this season against the Hounds, outscoring ENMU 68-5 in the four wins. ENMU’s lone victory was an 8-6 decision at Greyhound Field on March 2.
