Centennial committee accepting time capsule ideas from residents

The Curry County Centennial Committee is looking to its residents to help fill a time capsule.

The committee met Tuesday at the Curry County Courthouse.

Chair Dan Stoddard said the committee decided to accept ideas until the capsule is full or it’s time to put it in the ground.

Stoddard said the committee decided to place the time capsule partially in the ground, facing the courthouse next to the courthouse flagpole. It will also have a glass top so the contents can be seen.

“That way people can come by and see what Curry County is made of,” he said.

The committee voted to include yearbooks and other memorabilia from Curry County schools, including:

• A list of 2009 events nationally and in the county

• Curry County History Book

• Curry County Cookbook

• Centennial coins

• A 2009 phone book

• A 2009 farmer’s almanac

• A proclamation from the legislature of Curry County Day

• Memorabilia from Melrose including a maroon Old Timer’s Day cap

• A Centennial calendar

• A list of firsts in 2009

• Photographs and stories of pioneers who settled Curry County

Patsy Delk, the committee’s marketing member, said she feels the time capsule decisions will properly commemorate the county’s first 100 years.

“And the future of our new generations coming in. As an educator, that was very important to me. It’s all about our children. They are our future,” she said.

The committee voted to open the time capsule in 25 years, as long as it can be resealed, Stoddard said.

The committee also decided to surround the time capsule with a botanical garden.

The meeting Tuesday was intended to wrap up the Centennial celebrations, which lasted through 2009.

Stoddard said the committee and volunteers worked hard to make the celebration a success.

“It was a great team effort,” he said.
